Normal liver tests do not establish surgical safety

The video explains why liver-cancer surgery requires assessment of the liver that will remain, even when routine blood tests are normal.

Three things to know

  1. Child-Pugh class A does not guarantee safe major surgery. The video describes ALBI and ICG testing as additional ways clinicians assess liver reserve.

  2. Portal hypertension and the future liver remnant also matter. Fibrosis or cirrhosis can change how much functioning liver needs to remain.

  3. If reserve is insufficient, clinicians may consider a smaller resection, procedures to increase the future liver remnant, ablation or transplantation in selected patients.
