Liver hemangioma: when is treatment considered?

The video explains why diagnosis, symptoms and clinical context matter when deciding whether a liver hemangioma needs treatment.

Three things to know

  1. A liver hemangioma is a benign lesion, often found during imaging for another reason. Typical scan findings may establish the diagnosis; atypical findings or an uncertain diagnosis need further clinical assessment.

  2. With a confirmed diagnosis and no symptoms, treatment is usually unnecessary. Size or growth alone does not automatically mean surgery is needed. Continued growth, medical history and other findings can still warrant further assessment.

  3. Clinicians first check whether symptoms come from the hemangioma or another condition. Treatment may be considered when the lesion causes a clinical problem, such as confirmed compression or bleeding. The treating team decides the appropriate approach.
